Sylvia Chong

I teach in the Department of English and the American Studies Program, and direct the Asian Pacific American Studies minor, which I co-founded in 2005. I am affiliated with the East Asia Center and also work closely with the Media Studies Department. I have published on the Vietnam War, violence and film censorship, the Virginia Tech massacre, psychoanalysis, cultural studies, and American orientalist. I am currently working on a history of racial performance and yellowface in Hollywood, situated within an intellectual history of social scientific writings on race, culture, assimilation, and identity in the mid-20th century.
